Orthodontics

My passion for orthodontics started when my childhood dentist said I need braces to correct my teeth. I had extensive orthodontic problems and had to wear an orthopaedic appliance together with braces for quite a while. The results changed my life and left me with a devotion to help other people smile again.

Our team’s absolute commitment to provide top quality orthodontic treatment has left many patients satisfied, fuelling our obsession and enthusiasm in the field of orthodontics.

Orthodontics is the art and science of straightening teeth and aligning jaws. We use a range of medical devices to;

  • Make sure the tips of the teeth are aligned
  • Straighten crooked teeth
  • Improve speech and quality
  • Improve long term health of gums and teeth
  • Prevent long term excessive wear of trauma of the teeth
  • Treat an incorrect bite

Dentofacial orthopedics involves the guidance of facial growth and development, which occurs largely during childhood. Early orthopaedic treatment can even prevent your child from wearing braces (subjective to specific cases).

We recommend that your child visit us for an orthodontic check-up no later than the age of 8. This is important as some orthodontic problems may be easier to correct if they are found early.

The following is a general guide on what to expect and to do

Your 1st appointment
You will be requested to fill in the necessary documentation that will give us more information about yourself, your medical history and dental history.

Dr Borman will consult you to evaluate if it is necessary for a full examination of your face, jaws and teeth. We also want to listen and understand your desires and concerns about your dental care. Only then will we be able to provide you with the excellent care you deserve.

While we can often answer general questions about treatment during the initial examination, we can address specific areas only after careful analysis of the diagnostic records. We feel it is important to analyse each patient’s specific needs because in-depth planning leads to superior results and higher patient satisfaction.

Your 2nd appointment
If the preliminary appointment points to a need for treatment and you feel ready, a complete examination of your face, jaws and teeth is done with the aid of x-rays, photos and impressions. This may either be done on your 1st visit after the preliminary examination or alternatively, a 2nd appointment needs to be made. X-rays need to be taken at a different surgery of which Dr Borman will give you the full details and you will be requested to bring the x-rays along to the 2nd appointment.

Discussion
As soon as your treatment plan is worked out, you will visit us for a discussion about your treatment plan (usually about 2 weeks after your 2nd appointment or after having received the x-rays). During this visit;

  • The orthodontic problems are presented to you
  • The treatment plan and options are discussed with you
  • The duration of treatment and the financial implications in this regard are discussed with you
  • Co-operation factors are explained
  • A written diagnosis and treatment plan as well as an instalment payable cost plan is given to you for your insurance purposes.

We will answer any questions you may have. Our goal is for our patients to leave the surgery with a clear understanding of their specific needs, treatment details, and cost and length of treatment.
